Saffron the Easter Egger was hatched just this Saturday, and she (he?) is only 3 days old. Her comb is already showing little 'rows?' peas? and looking a little more raised than any pea comb chick I've ever raised. It's funny at 3 days old how nice her comb looks. I'm 90% sure she is a Cockerel even though she's still so young. Thoughts? Thanks in advance

Someone on here told me that the rows have nothing to do with gender, and that only the eventual reddening of the comb will tell you. I do not remember who now, though. I posed the same question about my EE bantam when it was a couple weeks old. I'll include the pictures, including its comb, that I took today. It's 5 weeks and I think it's a male.

Whatever Saffron and Pepper are, they are the absolute cutest!!

Thank you. I just thought the shape (u shape instead of narrow v shape) and the already appearing little 'peas' show that she's a male. Your Easter egger bantam is definitely a male unfortunately. He has a very red and big comb for 5 weeks old and also has a ton of red feathers leakage. I hope you get to keep him anyway!

Yeah, the pea combs get me. I'm still not all that sure about them. But the red on mine is a giveaway, lol. He got the first red on his shoulders at like, 2 weeks old. I am allowed roosters where I am, so it'll come down to his eventual temperament.

I will wait at least a week before making any decisions, thanks. I'm glad you get to keep your cute boy!

Way too young to tell. Technically all pea combs should have three rows of "peas" it's just usually easier to see on young cockerels because their combs develop faster.

These three chicks were female

This one was a cockerel and the first of the group to start crowing

Thanks for this info on the combs! I'm eyeballing my Ameraucanas and they all look like pullets to me! They are ... um ... just about 12 weeks old, and I did order 1 cockerel along with 7 pullets. I also ordered 7 BA and since they are ALL black it's been challenging to say the least! I know I have 3 BA cockerels for sure.

I sure wish I could remember who helped me with my EE comb questions.

My 4 Blue Orpingtons I got yesterday are supposed to be 3 females and 1 male. But the male isn't banded, so I've got no clue who is who, lol. I figure I'll sort it out as they grow. But I've also read Orpingtons mature slower than others, so I'm thinking it might be a bit still.
