"I better post a picture of that!" Weird rubber alien egg.

Hi all We saw this in the coop and knew we'd better cut it open.

We cut it open, and I knew we'd better post some pictures and ask y'all!

It's rubbery.
It has the consistency of slicing a hot dog in the solid part.
It didn't smell real good.

We have a few new pullets we've raised who might be starting to lay.
A few of the adult hens have been off/slow a while this winter.

This was on the poop board under the roost... not exactly in an established nest box.

It's called a "lash egg" or the condition is call Salpingitis.

Oh no... that doesn't sound good

Can I treat my whole flock? I don't know which chicken laid it. They all look good.

How are antibiotics administered? We have 10 hens and two roosters.

No, it doesn't sound too good

There is a withdrawal period (throw away all eggs) when you use antibiotics, so I wouldn't needlessly treat the whole flock if you can identify the one girl.
Watch your girls when you can, hopefully you will be able to identify one that seems a "little off", I would separate her to treat her and monitor her.

According to the Merck link below "therapeutic success can sometimes be achieved with tetracycline", but unfortunately it does not read too promising.

I've never seen one lay one that big. If that was the only one in her repro tract you could try giving her some Baytril. Baytril is banned for use in poultry, so that is something to think about before giving it.

Treat only the one that layed it. How many mature hens do you have?

Thank you both for your ideas and links. I posted another thread about this in the disease forum... once I found out it was a serious medical condition. I thought it would be better to have the discussion there. I have posted an update there just a few minutes ago, though I'm still not sure which chicken.

I appreciate the ideas about possibly treating... I'm not opposed to picking something up if knew who to treat. If the hen will die anyway, it can't hurt. I can get Tetracycline at our feed store, and I have some unused people tabs of ciprofloxacin (related to Baytril?) if it could be properly dosed.

I had a duck that looked a little off, so I brought her in to keep an eye on her. Later that day she laid a lash egg, so I started her on Baytril. About a month later she she laid a clutch of eggs and has been fine since then. Caught early, it can be treated with something like Baytril or Cipro. Take a look at you mature hens and see if one looks a little off.
