I can have chickens!

I posted last year about our town ordinance prohibiting chickens. Haven't been able to decide if I should just ignore the law and get a few birds anyway. One reason I was hesitant is that our town manager is our neighbor (he lives a couple of houses down from us) and I was afraid he might somehow find out. Yesterday, while at the local flea market, I happened to see him and his wife and stopped to have a conversation with him. I told him how I was hoping to get a few chickens and asked what the chances were of getting the town council to change the ordinance to allow for chickens. He said the chances of that were basically zero. Then he told me that as long as I didn't have a rooster and the people that live next to us didn't care, whatever I did on my own property was my business and he didn't need to know about it. The funny thing is he mentioned the no rooster thing a few times and I kept saying I had no interest in having a rooster...then he finally tells me that I need a rooster in order to have eggs, ha!

I had to educate him about that one.

Anyway, looks like I can finally start to plan on getting a few birds. Off to look at chicken coop plans now, lol.

I would definitely talk to your neighbors first. All it takes is one neighbor who wants to be a pain to call animal control and they will make you get rid of them. I would let them know that you are not getting a rooster and if they have any issues to come talk to you first and you will handle the problem (i.e. smell, noise, etc.) If you let them know ahead of time they are more apt to be supportive. I found out that I can write to the shire CEO to request that I can keep a rooster, the funny thing is that I don't have to liaise with neighbours just formally write to the CEO.
