A few questions first. When is your expected hatch date? Have the rest of the eggs hatched and this was a straggler? Did the chick pip externally?
It can be hard to tell which egg the peeping is coming from sometimes when you have an incubator filled with eggs. Are you positive you heard peeping coming from this egg?
As mentioned by @TheOddOneOut the best way to check on an unhatched chick is to candle the egg, which if you're not familiar with candling you just take the egg into a dark room and use a bright flashlight on the rounded end of the egg where the air cell is, so you can get an idea of what is going on inside.

We know what to look for to see if it's fertilized but what is it that we're looking for to see if it's still alive?

When did you set the egg? Here is a good incubation chart of what it should look like:

Do you see anything like that? I am not a hatching expert, but you should be able to put it back in the incubator.
