Maybe you should try to direct your help to people that want/need it, rather than people who expect it.

I agree wholeheartedly. People with a sense of entitlement don't appreciate help because they think it's their due. Help those who CAN'T help themselves, instead of those who won't. Maybe you'll start hearing "Thank you".
