I Can't Choose!!!

Hi Chickencrazy13. I see you are from southern Maryland like me! I got my first chickens this past summer. I got 2 EEs, 2 BRs and 2 Wyandottes. One of the EEs turned out to be a roo. So far he hasn't started crowing, he is very friendly towards me, and he even saved one of the Wyandottes from a hawk. So for the time being he can stay! My barred rocks are curious and friendly. The Wyandottes are curious but shy. They are at the bottom of the pecking order. The female EE is a little cooky. When it comes to the other pullets, she's top dog. But she is skittish when she is out free ranging. So when the other chickens move, she stays put until they get kind of far away and then she runs for it, to catch up. Pretty funny.

My wish list includes some Marans and Cream Legbars. The Legbars lay blue eggs. But they are very rare in the US and very expensive. So they are not in my immediate future. No matter what you decide on, you will still want them all!

I have red sex links and they lay really well (large eggs, average over 5 a week in my flock), are very curious and don't freak when I want their eggs!

I also have a dozen auracanas (sp?) and though I LOVE the pretty eggs, I am not as happy with their laying abilities (small/medium eggs, avg about 3/wk/girl which is just not enough when you're spoiled by the sex links, they are much more skittish and freak when I want the eggs.

Out of those those breeds the only ones I have had any experience with where RIRs, EE, and White Leghorns (Ironically the three chicks I got this year). I really like all of them, my white leghorn started laying at 20 weeks old and was laying 4-6 eggs a week (which is really good for how young she was), she also very friendly. Loves sitting on my lap, and love to be petted. My RIR started laying recently at about 32 weeks old (I don't know why she waited so long, I'm pretty sure they usually start laying before then...). I think she laid about 4 eggs her first week, a better start then my white leghorn, who laid her first egg, and waited about a week before she laid another (but then she started laying really well), she is also really sweet. My EE hasn't started laying yet, but is really sweet too.

I also have a Red Sex-link. She is an exceptional layer, and is also very sweet. I think it's definitely a breed to consider.

Here are two video's,mostly of my Jersey Giant, but you can see the BO's and the EE in there too.

Watch her as she finishes the half of banana my husband is offering. She starts to eye the other half that's on the table. She can see it and she knows what it is and she wants it. She is really smart.

And this video quality is poor, sorry about that. But just watch the fence line for dark movement. And turn up the sound. You'll clearly see that she ignores me talking but once I say her name, she comes running.

She's VERY friendly and really curious. Would prefer not to be picked up but will let me pick her up.

Oh my gosh, your chickens are so cute. Coco is a pretty girl!

-Rhode Island Red
-Barred Rock

-Buff Orpington
-Black Jersey Giant

Of all the breeds listed, I'd pick Easter Eggers, love the colored eggs you get and they produce really well, and the Buff Orps, they produce well, are calm and love the fuzzy butts!

I also have Silver Laced Wyandottes and I adore them, pretty and good layers. I also like my Black Cochins. They aren't the most prolific egg layers but they are very sweet and OH SO pretty to look at.

When ordering day old chicks, I usually order 25 of the EE's, 10 Cochins and 25 of other breeds like the Wyandottes, I like a mixed flock and mostly I stick with good egg producers.

You don't really need to narrow it down to 3 until later. However, the Jersy Giant and Buff Orpington don't fit your thesis of egg laying.

The breeds I have "narrowed" it down to:
Buff Orpington
White Rock
White Leghorn
Speckled Sussex

Orps are great layers. I get an egg every 27hrs from my 2(yes I charted how long between eggs for 2 weeks). My Production RIR are at every 25hrs and my BR's are every 28hrs.
