I challenge any crocheter to work this...

Jen,

Row 4 was a tricky one. I had to re-read it a couple times to be sure that I got it right. Its a bit of a tongue twister.

If you now have the correct number of stitches and it measures larger than 20 inches then I would suggest moving to the next smaller hook.

Probably your gauge was right for the swatch but when you got further into the hat your hooking relaxed and each stitch got a tiny bit looser. Just enough to add up and throw the size off.

That or your head got smaller.

JK, of course. LOL

Since I did mine in pink, I decided that it should look more like a spring hat so I pulled out the last row and then re-worked it plus an extra row in a more open pattern.
ch4; skip 1 stitch; *dc1; ch1; skp1* around.

Here it is on a dummy head. Sorry, dummy is child size, but it helps model the hat.

usually when I check guage, I'm being very careful with my stitches....and the gauge matches.
BUT when get into the project, I get in a hurry and crochet like crazy and my gauge gets a little "loose" making the project just a little bigger.
For this hat, I compensate for this by reducing back to 52 or 54 stitches per row instead of 56. That brings the diameter back down to 20 - 21 inches.
Another thing I do is make a few extra rows, turn under those rows as a hem and insert a 1/4 inch strip of elastic to snug up the hem.

Of course, a smaller needle makes for a smaller project too.

Any hats I make while learning a new pattern, I donate.

I just started another one in a variegated cotton yarn but Im not sure how it will turn out. The colors are nice, but the cotton has no stretch to it and I dont think that I like the "feel" of working with this brand of yarn. It is rather like crocheting with kitchen/cooking string used for trussing poultry.

Thanks... I'm so happy I finally got it right, now if I can only do it again, lol

Dont think I would like that either... next time I'm out I want to get some nice soft yarn to make one with.

Thanks... I made me a black one last night... now my husband wants a blue and white one for Kentucky

guess I'll get to work on that one in a bit.
