A small challenge with no particular time frame, start whenever you want, repeat it whenever you want and if you fall off, just dust yourself off and pick it back up again

The challenge is to go 10 days without checking the news (weather forecast is allowed). Watching the news too much is bad for one's mental health and I've seen the effects of that in the lives of people around me. Even cutting out the little amount i pick up has benefited me.

What should you do instead?

- Go for a walk
- Learn something new
- Hang out with your animals
- Hang out with friends and family
- Read the Bible
- Mediated
- Take a Nap
- Do something else you enjoy

Point is to do something else and allow your mind to recover :D

I don't have a TV and other than reading the local paper most weeks, I probably only look at the news every few months.
I don't have a TV either! Isn't it wonderful the clarity of thought that comes in its absence?

I don't really check the news, usually only for one specific thing I've been keeping an eye on.

Otherwise it's all tech news, stuff I usually like to hear about since it's relevant. The problem is that the Google Discover News Feed Thing on my phone started to show me politics and the such after some update. I've told it time and time again to stop and it's gotten super annoying that it doesn't listen 75% of the time.

I did cut out reddit though (again), it was bringing too much negativity into my life. Politics 24/7 there, even if you're not looking for them.

I'm pretty sure this post isn't going to be popular, but I'm used to that. I spent most of my working life as a newspaper or radio journalist. While I understand the appeal of staying away from the news -- and I don't watch TV news anymore -- I can't completely ignore what's happening in the only world where I currently exist.

I intentionally live out in the country, away from silly city rules and from noisy neighbors I don't like. I have recently been accused of being "a recluse and a Luddite." Neither label offends me.

However, even when I find news objectionable or uncomfortable, I still believe I need to know what's going on, what's happening with and to people that share this planet with me.

Politics has gotten to a ridiculously extreme level. People used to be political "opponents." Now, they are "enemies." It's as if we're all on the same lifeboat, each trying to sink the other's person side of the vessel, without realizing that we will all drown. On my Google news feed, which I check daily, I can choose what to read without having all the negativity crammed down my throat.

Many days, I'd like to ignore the world outside my own acreage. But if I don't know what's happening, I feel as if that means I'm giving it my tacit consent to keep going the way it is. To me, that feels wrong.

Well said!
