Hi, today was the day we got our new peachicks. They are one month old. I sat their box on the kitchen table's chair and told the kids not to open the box. My daughter wanted to see them before we put them in their building. I opened the box and the kids looked in then I shut it. I told her in plain English not to open the box while I went to the junk room to get the 2 water feeders (one for poweraid one for water). I get to the water feeders and hear my kids scream. Yes, she opened the box and they flew out.

She says "I didn't know. I didn't know mommy".

"That's why I told you not to open the box!" me.

One was on the vaulted ceiling cabinets, one was on the living room tv, one was on a bar stool, and one was on a couch in the living room. Everytime I got near one they would fly away. We got them outside now.

I got Purina game bird chow starter and poultry crumble medicated starter ratio 1:1 (they didn't have med game starter), water, poweraid, and a cucumber for them to eat and drink. They had a little poweraid, a lot of water, some feed and loved the cucumber.

One question I do have because I have not had chicks before is how to I enter their house with out them flying past me?! Wow can babies fly high and far!

They shouldn't fly past you, but keep the door as close to shut as possible and move slowly. They tend to panic less the slower you move, and when you speak gently the entire time.

Peachicks should be fed medicated game starter (if you can find it) or medicated chick starter mixed with gamebird starter. Make sure to get the starter with amprolium for the prevention of Cocci and I believe Purina offers starter with AND without and both are considered medicated due to the medication included for other problems. Starter should have 20-24% protein, which is higher than chickens (For example, my chick starter has 18% protein, my game bird starter has 24%... I mix the two which should land them somewhere in the middle). Substituting their starter with other foods can be harmful. They do not need grit if they are only eating the correct starters. If you feed them nearly anything else (which you shouldn’t do for a couple weeks at least) then they will probably need some grit sprinkled on their crumbles. Cleaned/baked sand works well for this

Game bird STARTER is different than game bird FOOD- the game bird starter is perfectly safe for them to eat (they are game birds after all), and the medicated chick food is mixed in just for the amprolium. The others are not wrong either, the peachicks would be ok on just the chicken chick starter as well. I think the others are concerned you got confused and gave them the adult game bird food (which typically has scratch grain in it) or too high of a protein level (some can have 28-35%, which is too high for chicks). I assumed since you said starter, you have game bird starter and it won't be an issue. Deep breath!

Congrats, What breed are they? they seem like black-shouldered.

I feed mine Turkey mix. Ive had a hard time buying cat food for mine so I throw in some frogs, Beatles and any other thing i can to spice up their diet.

i am thinking of calling the breeder back and getting 2 whites. what color would the chicks be if a white and a black shoulder mated?
