I didn't know that chickens took naps....

Today's the second full day with my first flock and it's just after 1pm. All the girls are napping peacefully. I had no idea they did that. I just figured they were always out scratching around looking for something to eat - on the move from dawn to dusk. Guess I might not know as much about chickens as I thought.

One of the girls has just discovered our nest box, but unfortunately I think she's using it for a nap, too. I was outside spreading mulch when I heard this loud scratching coming from the chicken coop. When I went to investigate I found she'd dug herself a nice little nest in the box and pushed out the ceramic egg. The roosts are on the other side of the coop and are higher than the nest box by quite a bit - at least one of them is. Another bird was sleeping on one foot like a flamingo, perched on a little table in the coop. The hidden foot is her bad one. She's got two massively crooked toes, but they don't seem to bother her and she's doing a great job with her babies.

I hope the one in the nest box is going to lay an egg while she's in there and not just nap. That's the spot for working, not sleeping. However, as my work ethic has gone downhill since bringing the girls home, I can't really complain. I really need to do some housework, but I can't stay away from the coop.

She might be practicing -- especially if you heard a lot of noise. I've got one that totally chews me out when she's ready to lay and I come in and "interrupt" her.

They definitely like to take a siesta in the afternoons, though, don't they?

Mine usually find someplace to hunker down and take a nap every afternoon. Under the fig trees is their favorite spot for naps.

Just wait til you look outside some sunny day to find them all sprawled out like they are dead!! Mine scared me to death that way only to find they were just napping and basking in the sun!!

Well...I got the hen out of the nest box for a few minutes - no egg. She went outside for a couple of minutes but then went right back into the nest box. I wonder what she's doing. Maybe she's thinking really hard about laying an egg? I'll be curious to see if she's still there after dark.
