I don't anything about roosters

I don't know anything about roosters and I have one. I just put him out there with the others and I fear I made a mistake. I currently have him separated into a coop and yard with the girls his own age as my old hens weren't letting him eat or drink a whole lot. So my question is.....is it normal for him to run around and chase the other hens even though they aren't even laying yet? They are only 5 months old and he is in there with 4 ladies. He is what we call an American chicken he is a Austrolop brahma Cochin cross! (He has no tail feathers and feather on only one side of his feet like those flying shoes in the Percy Jackson movie) so besides the fact that he is crazy looking is he acting crazy?

That's perfectly normal behavior, indicative of your perfectly normal rooster. He's no gentleman, but few roosters are - those are the truly GOOD roosters. This is the average behavior of an average roo - they will chase around anything female that moves.

However, I say it's very good for roosters to grow up with old hens who pick on them a bit. Roosters need a good kick in the pants every so often, and sometimes a normal roo can even be turned into a gentleman roo, if the older ladies manage to knock some sense into him. So unless he seems to get very dehydrated or begin loosing weight, I would put him out with your adult hens. Give those poor pullets a break too - 1 rooster on 4 young pullets will result in worn, torn feathers very quickly!
