I don't know if Im feeding the right chick feed…

I recently hatched out a silkie chick, and I have the purina medicated start and grow, but I got that because it has helped with all of our other chicks, but I was reading that silkie chicks might have problems with medicated feed. I’m not sure if this is true, but I am just trying to feed whatever is the best for him/her.

I only know about Silkies from borrowing them for broody hen. @Debbie292d may have an answer.

I've fed medicated feed when I bought chicks, but not for my own usually, just because I use Kalmbach's Flock Maker crumbles for all of the chicks and chickens here. We only have silkies here.

When I've fed medicated, I only used it for about three weeks, though, as that gives them the basics for protection for most strains of coccidiosis before we put them outside.

I always made sure to give them Poultry Cell water a couple times a week too. That might have negated out the amprolium in the medicated feed a little, but it still would do its job.

It's handy as now we wound up with two ducks, and that Kalmbach's Flock Maker is nutritionally complete for ducks too. I love just one feed for everyone!

It's higher in protein (20%) which is good for silkies, but it's lower in calcium, thus need to provide oyster shell in a separate container once they are laying. Do not have it out before they are laying though, nor let chicks near it.

That might be helpful for our ducks too! I also feed oyster shells, and eggshells freechoice!

We do not have silkies. I have crushed egg shells in a container and have not noticed the chicks going to it. How do you set up the oyster shell container when you have chicks? We have 2 & 3 month old chicks that free range with the flock.
