I don't think my chicks like me.... :(

Ours were definitely scared of us for the first week or two also. I think I even wrote a "how do we make our chickens love us?" post. Since then we got some very small mealworms (they were only two weeks old) and sat on the floor with them in a small space, doling out treats when they came near us. Now, they seem really comfortable with us. Also, the tip about not coming at them from above or behind is a good one -- it gets easier to scoop them up from underneath as they get a little bigger.

Oh yay, then it's not just us! We are completely smitten with our chicks but they seemed so scared of us the first few weeks. A couple (we have 9) are okay if I can get them away from the others before they start chickie-screaming, but they would all practically dive for the corner so they couldn't be the chicks on the outside of the huddle when we'd walk into the garage.

I have talked to them a lot when going to do laundry and such, and they would become curious enough about me to peek over the box at me. This weekend we moved them out to the coop and I sat with them and talked to them for a long time while I made sure the feeder and waterer were hung at the proper heights and they could access them okay. When I left the coop, they tried to follow me out the door! My heart melted--they really did like me after all. (Yeah, I'm a big sucker, all right.)

Much of a chicks nature is in their breed. i.e., banatms are usually more flighty or skiddish than standard sized birds. Our Serama are much more friendly as chicks than are the Vorwerks. Raising them by hand is the best way to ensure their friendliness towards humans. Sometimes they do have to be a few weeks older as someone else posted, before they think...gee, those big critters aren't too bad after all...

And of course bribes, as also posted, can work wonders!
