So I posted pics of my "titan" chicks that grew so quickly and sure enough they were meat chickens. I want to do meat chickens someday but not yet. Anyways, I had to go to the feed store yesterday to pick up dog food (a little mom and pop feed store, not the chain that I bought the first set of chicks from) and I asked the owner if they had any australorps or barred rocks yet. She said she had one barred rock pullet about 8 weeks old and she had just hatched out some australorps. So we went to take a look at them and I told her I'd like the pullet and two of the australorps. Then I asked her if she knew anyone who wanted a couple of meat chickens I had gotten by mistake and she said she'd trade me the australorp chicks for the meat chickens. Awesome, I was just going to give them away but I couldn't pass up that deal. So got rid of my meat chickens and got 3 new chickens. When I was introducing the pullet to my current chickens though, my last brahma got out of the coop door and made a mad dash for the woods. We looked for it for about 3 hours and gave the search. If it comes home, it will come home. So hear is what the chicken math looks like at this point...
Started with 2 RIR, 2 Easter Eggers, 2 light brahmas, and 2 mystery chicks that turned out to be meat chickens.
Lost 1 RIR and 1 Brahma within the first two weeks of having them.
Gained two australorp chicks and a barred rock pullet.
Lost the second brahma when s/he flew the coop
And now my flock consists of 2 Easter Eggers, 1 RIR and 1 barred rock out in the coop and even though I said I wouldn't do it again, for now I have the two australorps in a large cage inside. They are so quiet I forget they are there sometimes lol. Had some pasty butt yesterday but I think it was just the stress of taking them home. They seem to be doing well today.
