Hi all.
I found this community a few years ago when I got my first chickens, and have always brought my questions here. It never took much searching to find where somebody had the same question as I had, and the answers were very helpful. Finally figured I should join.
Where do I start? What exactly should I say about myself to strangers without embarrassing myself? I'm good at that by the way. Luckily I've learned how to laugh at myself. A lot.
I am a stay at home mom, a gig that is pretty new to me. Hubby and I have 3 kids. I've been in the medical field for the last 16 years. I am a US Army veteran. I have a lot of hobbies, I quilt, I cook, I make wedding cakes, I make candy, and occasionally do some catering. I paint miniatures. I play dorky role playing games with some awesome dorky friends, and none of us are socially inept or live in our parents basement. Okay, so maybe one does, but she's only 21, so that's okay, right? I lead a girl scout troop, and I raise critters. I can successfully grow the kinds of plants that thrive on neglect, which explains the most amazing array of weeds in my flower bed that any pseudo gardener could boast. If I find the motivation to go to bed on time on Saturday nights, and then to roll my sorry self out of bed on time on Sunday mornings, I'll get myself and the kids into town for church. (Hubby would go too, but he works on Sundays) I am involved in a local rodeo association, as well as with the county 4-H program and the local annual demolition derby.
In the house I have a 10 year old huntress/book worm/self saving princess/video game master, a 6 year old boy scout/super hero/lego master/tattler, and a 4 year old cowboy/wrecking ball/dare devil/scapegoat. Hubby is also a veteran, who now enjoys the kind of 5 day a week job that is unionized and pays overtime. I have two indoor dogs, an old fat mutt and a young yellow lab that hasn't found his brain yet.
Outside I have 5 white leghorns that aren't quite ready to lay yet, and a variety of older chickens, Rhode Island Reds, Barred Rocks, Light Brahmas, Americaunas, and Buff Orphingtons. I'm trying my hand at ducks for the first time, I have 1 Pekin, 3 Khaki Campbells, 1 Blue Swede, and 1 more that was supposed to be a Pekin, but now that it's got it's big duckie feathers, it's not looking so much like a Pekin. Still trying to figure it out. I also have 2 goats, 1 alpine nubian doe, and one unidentifiable mutt wether. I raise pigs each year and trade pork for beef with my inlaws, who raise a few steers every year.
And I talk a lot.
