I feel funny joining today. I got my 2 chickens about a month ago. Rockie a Plymouth barred rock, and Oreo a little bannie. I never thought I would enjoy chickens. I only got them to keep my little duck company. Duckie was born in my hay barn, and his mom left him. I picked him up and tried to get mom to take him, but she absolutely refused. Duckie is a muscovy. I fell in love with the chickens immediately, and Duckie fell in love too. I kept them indoors until the dog crate wasn't big enough. I bought a coop and out they went. All was well until this morning. I went out to feed the horses and I saw the bottom door on the coop open. I ran over to find something had clawed at it, opened the door and there lay Rockie and Oreo. No wounds, but dead. I was just heart broken. I don't understand why a preadator would leave them. Poor Duckie is fine... physically, I am sure distraught mentally. I want more chickens. Husband fears it is too hot to try to raise more chickens with Duckie outside. We are running into the 100's .... would baby chicks make it outside? Or should I try to get a grown chicken?
