Flea (a possible OEGB X Silkie) is one odd little chick. He'd rather be around humans then other chicks and he gets himself into strange situation. Like today.

He shares a brooder with three other chicks and two ducklings. The chicks are; Cotton the Delaware, Fondant the White Leghorn and Flick the Polish. The ducklings (breed unknown right now) are Chowder and Piper.

Somehow they managed to knock their water over and flood the brooder. Flea is the only one that got drenched (still not sure how THAT worked out, but okay) and then in some bizarre fashion Flea ends up covered in their food (chick starter with brewer's yeast added for the ducklings). By the time I got home Flea had dried off and gained a crispy coating thanks to the heat lamp.

Flea is fine by the way, I put him/her on a heating pad while I cleaned up the mess. Bizarre.

Wish you had a picture of that! I've seen breaded chicken before but not a live one, lol.

I do to!

But I was too shocked to even think of doing that. To make up for it, here's one from this morning.

I still don't know how to fix this "issue". I can't get him wet and I don't want to accidentally pluck him bald. He will be a week old as of tomorrow and he is still so tiny!

What a cutie! I know ducks can get very messy, maybe it would help to keep them separate from the chicks?

They actually aren't that messy. Since I've made it impossible for them to climb into their water, the mess is almost zero. Now, the chicks kicking out the shavings/feed they've knocked from the dish, is another story.

Oh, I did separate them once; that lasted all of 5 minutes. Both parties ran back and forth screaming their little heads off till they were reunited.

He is a cutie, even though his cuteness verges on eccentric. He will only drink out of the lid of a Dasani water bottle, nothing else, and has claimed one of the feeders as HIS and screams his head off when a bigger chick pushes him out of the way.

Flea sounds like a real character! I guess you're going to have you hands full with him

Would you like to borrow him? He makes a GREAT motion detector! Open door, CHEEEEP!, walk down the hall, CHEEEP!. Funny how quiet he is when no one is within his hearing range.

That's ok, I have 9 motion detectors outside already. And 10 ducklings coming in April. Might have to walk around wearing ear plugs

Don't you wish they (chicks and ducklings) hatched making adult sounds? I hate the little shrill, peeping, voices they have for the first couple months. Clucking and quacking is sooo much better.
