I have 8 boys in my bachelor pen, they have been in there for weeks and they seem to have a pecking order and it has actually become quite peaceful. I suck at vent sexing so when i saw them crow in the group pen I marked them and when I had 8 I put them in the new pen together. Well this morning was a weird one indeed. First I found a shell-less egg and when I went to check the boys there was an egg in there too! I checked them all and it appears the culprit was a A&M

. That poor girl has been locked in there with 7 boys for weeks now

. I'm surprised they didn't kill eachother. Funny I have 2 boys in with 10 girls and 3 of the girls are bald but this girl was in with all those boys and she has all her feathers. So my question is how common is it for females to crow?

You may have thought you heard her crow from what I read if a bird crows (chicken or otherwise) it normally is not able to lay eggs because it's hormones are all messed up. So i'd say that maybe she was doing the scared call when a roo crowed and you thought she crowed I could see how it would easily be confused.

I've heard that a crowing female is considered bad luck.

To the OP: Are you sure it was a crow, and not just the crying sound she is making?
