I've been lurking for almost 6 months now and have learned a great deal already. My reason for finally joining is a sick hen, but I'll start a new thread for her in the appropriate place :)

I decided to just copy/paste the suggested intro template, as I'm sure many others have done, but it just seemed easiest for the time being.

Quote: 1 - New as of 6 months ago! My first batch was week-ish old chicks, 8 of them. My "chicken friend" brought them to me. I'd wanted only hens, getting chickens primarily for eggs. 2 of them ended up being roosters, but we were attached by then so they're still here LOL

2 - 1 of the first 8 died an "accident" with one of our dogs :( so my friend decided I needed 5 more. These 5 were old enough to be correctly sexed, so they were/are all hens. One of them went broody, would not break out of it, so I gave her 3 eggs to hatch. They hatched Friday morning. Sadly, on Sunday, 1 of them just...disappeared :( Even more sadly, after having brought momma and the 2 remaining chicks into a spare bathroom (the weather had turned just icky, 40's/50's and rainy) I came home last night to find 1 of the 2 dead :( :( So there's just one, and s/he makes a total of 13 (which btw is my lucky number LOL)

3 - Quite a few breeds - Cochin hen (the sick one, new thread later), a beautiful Cochin cross roo, an Americauna who, according to my friend, is technically an EE because she's the "wrong" color (and the one who went broody), 3 black sex links, a white EE, 2 hens who were supposed to be NHRs but aren't (they were from a shipped egg batch that obviously got it wrong), a black hen who was supposed to be an Australorp but is apparently a cross, and an olive egger who is supposedly a Marans/Americauna cross. I think that covers them all!

4 - I think I went looking for safe foods to feed them and the wonderful list here popped up. But I also heard great things about this place from the COTH horse forum (for any of you who are there, and I know some are!) who said it was the "COTH of the chicken world" which is a great comliment!

5 - We have about 10 acres with 4 horses, 2 dogs, and 6 cats. I ride, show (when I have sound horses), garden, we take the dogs out on our bikes quite frequently, and I make jewelry, as well as work full time.

6 - Somewhat covered above LOL I'm in the wireless provider industry in the IT area, have been there for 23 years. My husband is in the IT area as well, specifically testing automation. I'm lucky to have my Dad in the same city so he's a free caretaker for the horses and cats when we are out of town.

I hope that's enough info for you :) Now I'm off to ask for help for my poor Cindy hen.
