Hi! I’ve been wanting chickens for years now, and finally moved someplace where they aren’t just accepted, but practically expected, so I brought home a dozen chicks eight weeks ago. They are cute and funny, but definitely hitting the teenager phase. We moved them out to their coop last weekend, but when I sent the husband and kids to buy more bedding, they came home with more chicks, so for now I have indoor chicks and outdoor chicks.

We picked a variety: Buff Orpingtons, Wyandottes, Cuckoo Marans, Plymouth Rocks, Easter Evers, and a little silkie bantam. So far my favorite thing is just watching them interact, chase bugs, and explore. The little bantam will ride around on my shoulder and the rest like to peck at my shoes. In the evening after I put them in the coop I just sit in the doorway and let them come up to me for attention.

In addition to the chickens, I’m also taking my first serious attempt at a garden this year, using the straw bale method. I’ve been canning for years using produce from the farmers market, but I can’t wait to pick something for dinner from my back yard.

I have plenty to learn about these funny creatures and I can’t wait to be able to contribute.

Thanks.
