I finally understand the saying, "You're a chicken"!

I went out to the coop this evening to throw the chickens some cantalope (spelling?) rinds and only one of the hens was brave enough to try it! The others were curious and watched her like a hawk. As soon as the curious hen moved the rind, the others all went running! Even Rhodey, my roo! I looked at them and asked, "What's wrong? Are you guys just a bunch of chickens?" Then I realized what I had said and that I had just answered my own question! They are just a bunch of chickens!

When we first got our hens, one was on the roosting pole. the rest were on the ground, eating. The one on the roost wanted to join the others and she kept pacing on the roost, looking for a place to jump down from. She paced for about 5 minutes, all the while hubby and I are watching her. i said "look! She's chicken!"--not realizing what I had said. Neddless to say we got a good chuckle at her, and my expense.

I just couldn't get over my rooster being scared too!!! Isn't he supposed to be the big brave protector?!?!

That's funny! My flock just did something similar. I gave them some left over yogurt, and it was entertainment for at least 30 minutes. The younger birds have recently joined the older ones. The older hens know that when Momma comes walkin in with a bucket or a dish, she'd got goodies!!! So they all lined up and waited for me to put it down. The younger ones are not used to getting treats, and they stayed about five feet back watching the older hens eat up. They didn't want any part of it!
