I had my daughter help me - we're supposed to be getting our Rhode Island Reds tonight.
Can you take a pic at the pics and tell me if something looks wrong - or like I should do something differently?
I'd appreciate it.

almost forgot to show you their make shift perch.
It used to be a wall rack that held canned goods in our pantry I cut off a section and put it upside down.
Do you think this will work for a while?

Thanks guys!
And thanks for the warm welcome...

btw... um.. any thoughts on how many chicks I can put in this brooder?

I would pull the sheving unit out for the first few days. Baby chicks are very curious and uncoordinated. That could get them trapped. I also would get 2 good thermometers and put one in the middle at chick level and the other on one end. Have a good assortment of different watt bulbs so you can adjust the heat. I use this same set up for our qualis and it works great.

^^^^ what he said - take out the metal grate. You wouldn't want any little ones getting their toes stuck and break a toe, foot or leg.

I'd switch to a red light as well. Red is calming and they can sleep better. Reading lots of posts again about folks with chicks picking on each other.

How many are you planning on putting in there?

OH - and most important - we need to see pics of the little ones.

Thanks for sharing and enjoy them. They will start to grow overnight.
