Just like the post says I got 9 dozen farm eggs from a local swap. I am " thinking" about rigging up a Homemade simple bator to try and hatch a dozen of them. What are the chances you think? They we not cold when I got them - so I don't think they have been in a fridge - at least not today..... I have thought about cracking one open to check for the bullseye, and I may go fot it if they are fertile. But, with THAT many I'm wondering how old they may be to have collected that many for sale and if they have taken a week or two to collect how long have they bee in the fridge - there is no "laid on" date on these, lol. I think it would be fun and interesting, but I sure don't want to waste good eating eggs either!!! Whatcha think????

It would be helpful to know how many hens the local farmer has (and how many roosters). I have a friend who bought a dozen local eggs from someone she knew had a rooster, put them under a broody and had good luck.

I also have read about people taking eggs out of the fridge and putting them in the incubator with success.

Plenty of people (myself included) have rigged a homemade incubator.

If I were you, I would rig the incubator first and then run it empty for a few days. If it works, then I'd look for eggs. If you don't care about breed, you should be able to find local fertilized eggs on the cheap, ones that you know more about whether they've been in the fridge, for how long, whether the hens were around roosters, etc.

Yes, that's what my hubby says he wants me to find some hatching eggs at Jacob's Cave next weekend. And, a few laying hens since our young pullets are not contributing anything quite yet. He promises to have me a homemade bator made by then - a modified full size fridge. Can you tell I am the impatient one around here?!?!

Well, of the nine I cracked and made into eggs for fried rice, 8 had a bullseye - so I guess fertility wouldn't be too much of an issue with these, but viability still might.... Yummy dark orange yolks too - and big eggs several I think might be doubles! Well, I guess if nothing else I have a great find at $1 a dozen for awsome farm eggs!
