I Found a Peahen

I came home from work today and a peahen was on top of my garage. I called a few neighbors and it was none of theirs, but I wouldn't imagine it's home is very far away. My mom eventually walked right over and picked it up (after it made its way off the roof obviously). We tried calling animal control but were only able to leave a message. We put the hen in the cage my german shepherd usually sleeps in, lined it with ferns, gave it water and a bunch of seed. Then it layed an egg. I live in a small town so it shouldn't be too difficult to find the owner. If the owner can't be found, we're willing to construct a pen and keep it (have all building supplies around the house, yes, enough for a very large pen).

For now is there anything we should be doing to make the bird more comfortable? I'm aware the dog's cage, although quite large, isn't big enough for the bird to live out of, but we don't have anywhere else to keep it at the moment.

And also...what am I supposed to do with this egg???? Eat it? Give it back to the bird? It's in the fridge for now.... I'm a total peacock/peahen noob.

Any help much appreciated, for now we're just trying to facilitate the bird until the owner can be found.

They can eat chicken feed or gamebird feed. As long as she has food and water she'll be fine for a little while. Eat the egg or pop it in the incubator if you want to try and hatch it.

Where are you located?

I'm up near Winsted, CT.

We already fashioned a makeshift pen for the bird, it's about 10x10 and 6' high , maybe a little bigger.

I'll try to get some pics up soon, I have to work soon and don't have time now.

We had a peahen move in. Then a couple peacocks. Then they set up housekeeping. I was delighted. At first. They are very good mothers unfortunately and now we are overrun with them. Can't raise any flowers. Can't catch them. They roost on the barn and high in trees, they are very fast and they are excellent flyers. Even the coyotes can't catch them. I have thought about putting up a sign. Free Peacocks. You catch. But I don't think anyone else can catch them either!!

Well you have a blackshoulder peahen, if she was around a male her next few egg will be fertile, so let her set them or hatch them yourself.
