Well, after hitting the two feed stores I have around here, and losing two, I have 24 chicks in my brooder (4 days to 1.5 weeks approx)

Hubby made the comment last night "When is grandma (his mother) going to bring home more chicks? Let's just make this an even 30!"

WOW!!! But, this mixed group of chicks I have really doesn't have anything we REALLY wanted (as we wanted a good DP bird that also lays well in the winter). I also want at least one more rooster (I think I have all pullets). So I said "Maybe we could order the last few" He said that was OK...

Now, where can I get such a small order of what I want, in time to mix with these guys?? I think some of these guys will end up outside before others as they are growing the feathers much quicker (the EE's for instance)

Just a few more... thats how it starts!

There is a website (www.mypetchicken.com) that you can order as few as 3 chicks, but I found that the shipping was more than I was willing to pay.
I found that www.healthychicksandmore.com was better for me. Their minimum is 10, the lowest I was able to find. Plus they have all different kinds of breeds. Shipping was very reasonable!
Good luck with your search!

50 is a good round number too!!

Oh my, what to do now.. I like the selection at healthchickensandmore, and being able to choose my 10 is great (and get a free one), but oh, I have been addicted... get the 11 I want and go, or get another 10 assorted heavies with it... Can I handle another 20 chicks??? Wow, 50 is looking really good

Oh, what will my husband do with me..

So many decisions... this is why I just go to the feed store..

So at home I have 4 Americaunas (prob EE), 3 Light Brahmas, 3 Silver Lakenvelder (sp?) and 3 mysterious from The Mercantile (all supposedly pullets), and then another 8 mysterious straight-run from Farmers Co-Op.

Now I just ordered: 2 Silver Laced Wynadottes, 2 Black Giants, 2 Speckled Sussex, 2 Buff Orpingtons, 2 Dark Brahmas and 1 mysterious chick all straight run.

Total new chicks this year ---- 35!! They should mix well with my dozen out back

I hope I can squeeze the money together to get that new chicken coop built

. Hopefully next year I can hatch my own.
