Hi I just ordered 10 layers'leggerns' they sent me 16 and I think 6 are roosters . They said the males are for warmth . Is this normal ?

Last time I ordered from same place I only got 10 layers, no roos .

All 16 look very healthy so far . They were shipped the 18th and i got them this morning .

Yes, it's typical. I don't know if it is always just for "warmth" or if its a way for them to get rid of extra roosters. You can usually specify if you do not want any extras (if you don't want to have to sell/give away/butcher extra roosters).

Hi Meerkat,

!

Sad but true, most "packing peanuts" as they are known, are cockerals. Try listing them on your local Craig's List and putting up signs at all the feed stores around. It is not unusual at all for them to be included. Gladd they all got there in good shape.

The meerkat is one of my favorite creatures!

At 16-18 weeks, leghorn roos make great fryers. Not a lot of meat but great for 'buffalo' fried chicken.

You mean if you order only hens the supplier will send roosters, too? What a nightmare! Sounds like a way to get rid of unwanted stock.

First time they just sent the females . Next tiem I'll know to tell them no roos .

I'm sure we can find someone to take them if we decide not to butchewr them .

I'll have to see how these roos act to decide if I want to keep them that long . Our bantams did nothign but fight, so we had 5 roo pens ! Not going to do that again .

Hopefully these are leggorns and not so mean .
