I Got 6 Roosters, I Ordered Pullets Only

Hi everyone and thanks so much for your replys . I forgot my manners trying to get chics settled in .

We like doing things the hard way . We did not get prepared although we knew they were coming . We did have the starter and equipment from last time we had chickens , just not set out . We got the starter last week and shavings and paper towels .

We have a great brooder we made for first chic so I think we should put them in there .

It has a hardware clothe floor so maybe we could make a bed on one end . Any suggestions ? We have shavings, and paper towels .

I can't post pictures because my webtv won't allow it .

LOL did I mention I was ignorant about chickens ?

First roos we had we named all of them . So we felt bad about them gettign cooked for dinner the same night we got rid of them . We are slowly becoming country folks, although hubby hunted as a young man he is a animal lover now but said he will butcher if he doesn't name them and play with them .

We had extra roos too. I ordered 1, got 9. My son is a falconer though and all went to be falcon food. It's a noble kind of death, I guess, and besides I didn't want to eat them.

We named all our packing peanut roos too! They are ALL named Tyson!!!! They will all be freezer camp inmates in about 6-8 weeks!

I am going to be the snob here...
Leggerns, as it is supposed to be pronounce ( only found out when I was 40+ years old, thought that Foghorn Leghorn was the correct way, my ignorance revealed) however, it is spelled Leghorn.
Also, I don't know if the question of what is a 'cockerral' was a joke

but the spelling is cockerel, and yes, it is an immature male chicken. There is a whole thread on misspellings, misstating and discombobulating names of breeds and species that is quite humorous.

Back to the quesiton about the extra roos, if you have the room, raise them and eat them! What better chicken to eat than that you raised yourself? If you are comfortable breaking the rule of "Don't name it if you are going to eat it." Then go for it. I make sure my kids don't even pick up and hold the meaties when I order them for the very same reason. They have only one problem with eating our own chickens, when we have it 3 or 4 times a week

Good luck with your new babes, and don't worry, you aren't the only one with the cart before the horse, I am right there with you!

I guess being used as 'packing peanuts' is better than being tossed in a garbage can to eventually die as others are tossed on top until the can is full only to be poured in a 39 gallon garbage bag which is tied off at the top then tossed into the county landfill. The chicken is one creature I can't slaughter and eat. I can do squirrel, pig, cow (extra hands needed for that!), deer and so forth but the chicken or any bird is off limits for me. Don't really know why. Maybe it's the act of slicing the jugular or chopping the head off. Now, I have no problem eating chicken that I have not killed so I know I'm a hypocrite. Oh, well, just shocked to learn roosters are sent when only hens are ordered.

Cockerels are male chickens under one year old, pullets are female chickens under one year old. Cockerel is where the shortened term "cock" for cock-fighting originated. The first time I heard of the illegal sport, I had a far different mental image.

Sorry, family-oriented board, but it just brought up that silly memory.
