I GOT A Goose!!!! Picts on page 2

I hope that your goose experience goes better than mine! Mine have just hit the 6 month mark and they are so mean! I have had them from day one so you would think that they would at least be nice to me but nope! I do love them though, even though they are super loud, try and kill my ducks, chase and bite the kids and hate me. I hope they get nicer as they mature.

My Canada goose that I had was very sweet. She was the one that got me hooked on geese (up until then I had hated them as I had bad experiences with them as a child). I have heard with the Chinese geese especially that there are two kinds: 1) the kind that you have to pick up to put in their pens since they are so people orientated and in your pocket and 2) the kind that are temperamental bastards no matter what you do

So far my guy seems very sweet, though he is about 3-4 months old and obviously getting adjusted to his new home.

Working on getting pictures. All rainey now. His name is "Binky".

(seems to fit him)

OK I have discovered a THIRD kind of Chinese goose__so to update, there are:

1) the kind that you have to pick up to put in their pens since they are so people orientated and in your pocket

2) the kind that are temperamental bastards no matter what you do

3) The kind that are sweet to people and temperamental bastards to any other animal around.

I was able to let Binky / Lucky (name still undecided apparantly) out with us in the yard yesterday and he promptly attacked my rooster, a barn cat, my daughter's old decrepit fainting goat, and he expressed ominous interest with the dogs in the fenced in yard. I thought my Canada Goose was mean to other animals but she had NOTHING on him. So still not sure on gender but thinking that this is tending more towards male due to aggressive stance he is taking. Still very sweet to people though and follows us around like a dog. (very ironic as he HATES dogs, apparantly).

I am sure too, that he is still adjusting to his new home and likely feeling a bit on guard and threatened right now so hopefully he will calm down and soon be able to be let loose during day to free range without hurting any of the other animals or himself.

So the saga continues...

Wish me luck!

Hello, we have 6 chickens, 1 rooster, 6 ducks, and 3 geese. My daughter is VERY good at sexing our birds.

She looked at your goose and believes it's a boy. There are a few things to look for in ducks and geese and one of them is their tail if it points up or curls up it's a boy if it's flat or points a little down it's a girl.

Also boys necks are a little thicker, boys are a little larger than girls, and boys are prettier.

It's easier to tell them apart if you have one of each sex to compare.

We have African Geese they are similar to Chinese Geese in size and shape. Ours are brown an gray and have that signature bubble on their bill.

We hatched 1 in an incubator in early spring, he hung around with ducks and was pretty happy about this. But then I hatched 2 more and when I introduced them to him I was astonished he became very protective over them. Honking and calling them to follow him, always looking after them protecting, them from the ducks and chickens.

We have 6 kids and only recently I noticed the leader male putting his head down and hissing at my little ones 8 and under. He won't do this to anyone else. I think if the birds are used to people playing outside and being around them then they get used to people and won't see them as a threat. They will eat from our hands but don't like to be handled much.

We let our birds roam freely on our land. Unfortunately this spring we lost a few birds from predators. But since having our geese we haven't had any problems, they are very protective. I think even the ducks and chickens know this because they all hang around the geese for protection.

The only drawback is the droppings in the yard. We've gotten used to it by now and don't mind it much. Our grass is a lot nicer and with out any chemical fertilizers!

I was thinking more towards boy but just was not sure with that head knob not overly developed. Could argue either way with my inexperienced eye.

I got him from posting an ad on Craigslist looking for geese and someone had got him as a gosling as a rescue situation and were looking to place him as he has an issue with dogs.
