Very cool. I do the exact same thing. Science, biology and anatomy in particular, is so interesting. A lot can be learned by studying the bird like you’ve done.

My kids love it already and they are interested the chicks whole life when a new one starts to lay its like Christmas lol they help take such good care of them.

PLEASE tell me that chick is now floating in alcohol in a jar on your desk! That is fascinating and would make an amazing wet specimen.

I also open D.I.E.s to see what is going on... I haven't had anything unusual like that, though!

Use isopropyl or denatured alcohol. Because they are small and don't have a tough exterior, you shouldn't need to inject them. When you first put them in, the clear alcohol will discolour... that is the alcohol permeating the specimen and replacing the bodily fluids. I'd have to look up the timeframe for specimens of that size, but after a certain period of time you replace the alcohol, and again if needed until it stops becoming discoloured (meaning the specimen is thoroughly infused).

Well this is good info too. I’ve got a baby octopus that I’ve had for about 50 years. It is in a jar of what I perceived to be formaldehyde (purchased that way.) Over the years the liquid in the jar has decreased, but I’ve never opened it.

If it was done at an institution or by another professional, it probably is formaldehyde

I've never done anything like that. But, I did save puppy teeth and keep them in an empty pill bottle. Still have them. Haven't had puppies since 1980. Also had my dog's bladder stones in a jar (vet gave me) but figured after he passed away - I could dump out the stones. He never asked for them back anyway.

I have a jar of puppy teeth too! I don't get to collect many since my puppies are crazy ranch dogs lol

Well, may be. For some reason my dad bought it for me when I was in the 3rd grade. Let’s just say the kids at school were really impressed. Back in the late 60’s there weren’t very many card carrying pickled octopus owners. I’m an only child and probably already had everything, so an octopus it was.
