Yep, most places it's illegal and even if it wasn't, when you dump a predator you are just putting your problem off onto someone else.

A trick to make it easier to carry a filled trap safely is to put a handle on a length of heavy wire. Bend a small hook at the end and you can keep out of reach yet lift with ease. I also use a "U" shaped wire with a hook at both ends for more control. About a one inch hook and a length of one foot between the hook and where you hold is good.

them coons are pretty fiesty when caged, watch out it don't reach out and get ya, there mean as all get out , i believe a gun would be the way to go, drowning is , well it would suk to drown, rather have someone shoot me, eating chickens is just part of being a coon, a dead coon is a good one, i am sure a coon club in your area would love to train a pup with the varmint:

Congrats on the trap and the Coon. Drowning is ugly for any creature. Recommend you walk away once you put it into the water. Another alternative.... drive that creature out into the country side, at least one "watershed" away and let it go.

We live in the middle of a national forest and we are the intruders here. It is not the fault of local predators that ole Trinityfly has set up a potential lunch stand right in the middle of their territory. So we transport the critters we trap in the "Have a Heart" trap itself and just let them go. In the years we have been here we have transported skunks of two varieties, squirrels and "ring tailed cats" out of our immediate vicinity. To my knowledge none has found its way back.

We have had to kill a skunk. My trap mal functioned and it got loose in the barn. The tough little critter attacked me. Big mistake!

Whatever means of elimination you choose try to give the creature its dignity and make it as fast as possible.

Good luck

Glove up good (leather work gloves oughta do it) if you have to attatch a bungy strap or something to the handle with a broom and drag it (the trap) to the water then do it.
DO NOT RELEASE IT!!!!! I would be severly choked if a neighbor of mine decided that my property was far enough away from his and released a coon or critter on it.
if you have a pond throw the trap in there! if not rain barrel or big garbage can with a lid - or put the trap by the muffler of a vehicle tarp over it all and turn on the vehicle.
wait as long as you can! for either
or find a grown up with a gun.
GOOD JOB ON CATCHING THE COON!!!!!!!!

Before moving the trap secure the door with twists of wire or thick zip-ties. It can be done with care, just keep your fingers well away from the places on the trap where the animal can reach you with its teeth or claws. Sometimes when those live traps are lifted or set on their sides the door won't hold as tight, and a frightened animal can wiggle its way out.

Is there an adult with a gun that you can call to come and shoot it? Drowning takes a long suffering time. I hate racoons but try to dispatch them in a quick manner, trapped or on the run.

The animal control here will not p/u any trapped wildlife so I am on my own.

Congratulations on catching him though. Good job.

Congratulation on catching the varmint. If I lived close enough to you I would bring over my 410. I checked with my local Game and Wildlife and they said no problem. They're not endangered.
