I got my great dane!!!

Cute, we have a pie bald merle female.
I think my mom told me once from an article she read, that dry foods can also be a factor in bloat and that adding some wetness every once in a while helps prevent it.

He's gorgeous! Hope he keeps those blue eyes for you!

I have a Lab that is a gulper when it comes to his food.
We put a large rock in the middle of his bowl so he has to pick around it to get his food. It slows him down alot.
They sell special bowls with the big bump in the center that do the same thing, but the rock is free!

Oh, you are so lucky! I want a Harlie Dane so bad.........but, I cannot afford such a huge dog.
I need a smaller farm-like dog......probably mixed, for my family.

Did I tell you that you are so lucky ? ! ?

I hope he keeps his blue eyes.

Thanks guys!!!

I was dead set on getting a harlequin until I started looking at the costs and it blew me away! They're hard to find, even as rescues. We've never gotten a dog through a breeder but had to this time just to get a puppy. I've always had rescues. We were super lucky to find a local lady who had merles for a lot less than the harlies so I was excited. This is also her last litter so it made it even more important that I got one lol.
His father is a little over 200lbs with piercing blue eyes so I'm really hoping he keeps them.

I'm going to try the rock in the food bowl today. He won't come in the kitchen at all. I think he's scared of the floor lol so I'm bribing him in there with wet food. He slept in the bed with dh, myself and the GSD last night. Enjoying it while it lasts, soon he'll be too big. I'm so happy to finally have a dane!!!!

For those looking for danes, there is a rescue in Mobile, Alabama, who does all large breeds, but he mostly specializes in great danes. He gets a lot of blacks and fawns, but he also gets merles and harlequins. Of course, being a rescue, all the dogs are spayed and neutered. If you are looking for one, he's a good source...and you'll be saving a dog's life!

The animal shelter here can put you in touch with him, or I have all his info if anyone is interested.

I am so happy for you, he is gorgeous. I just got a new dog a week ago, a Basenji, I have been wanting one of those for so long...

about names

that is a tough one

our boys names through the years have been;
Bogus ( my darling westie that passed in late march)
Lou ( our darling chow/dalmation/golden mix, he passed last week)
Bogus and Lou were best friends and they passed exactly 4 weeks apart, now they are together again...we miss them dearly.
Otis, my Basenji
Gus, our Dachshund
Willie, one of our cats in the past
Merle, a cat after Merle Haggard

just some ideas.

Good luck with him

Looking at those adorable pics is torture I've wanted a dane forever.. but I do not need another dog lol... 6 is way more than enough..
my mom had one as a child, his name was scout and he was also a merle. their neighbor bred great danes and at this time merles were a color pattern that noone wanted. the breeder would drown all of the merles when they were born. my mom got the breeder to give her the one merle in that litter so he wasnt killed. they raised him from a 2 day old pup into a 100 lb + gorgeous dog.
The neighbor down the street absolutely hated him though, my moms dad was walking him one day, and he stopped to pee in that neighbors yard. she at the time was driving into her garage, and was so outraged she stepped on the gas instead of the brake. She drove right through the back of her garage.
