I got quail, do you have quail?

Hello Marty1876. I do have a few cages, but plan to have my sons build a few more as ours are old and were used for their rabbit projects over the years. We've googled plans for quail cages. I am looking forward to raising them. I also have some peafowl, ducks, banties and a few laying hens left. We had a problem with minks tunneling into the layers' house and killing most of them last summer. I had to shut that particular building down for now and moved all into an existing building. Put in higher roosts and buried the fencing more deeply into the ground. We were able to live trap several mink. They are HEAVY and they can apparently chew through most anything. No further loss of poultry over the fall and winter. Am planning to build a permanent outdoor area for the adult quail but that will be down the road, pending how this project turns out!

If I was only looking to have 10 quail how do I have to house them. Cages, coops, lofts. Also I keep reading males getting aggressive with female, can someone explain that. Also what do they like to eat the most. Someone help me quick.

Really any of the above has been done. If it were me, I'd be think'n rabbit hutch type pen. But alot of folks run ground pens too. I'd have to ask what was the goal here. Pets just to have, breeders birds, eggs... If your think'n breeder set up, and dont want to have beat up hens. The answer is a higher hen to roo ratio. Say four or five hens per roo. keeping these in cages alone will bring aggression down too. One roo per breeding pen. the more space the better. I'v had good luck with a 6'x 30" pen for cots. Room for a nice sand box and 5 or 6 breeder birds. Now for a grow out situation, you could stack 20 birds in that space say up to 8 weeks and then send them to freezer camp.Alot of folks run quads in 2'x2' pens with no trouble at all as well. 3 hens per roo in a long term situation and the hens will be rough after a while. If she had 3 or 4 more girls to help carry the load she'd have a lot easier life! Bill

Thanks! I am planing on getting more after I build them a larger pin. I'll be sure to put pictures up when It gets finished. Im using these as my SAE for FFA.

Sorry kinda left that a little vage. I've got a lot of coturnix and 3 little buttons I rescued. As for my cots I've got jumbo's Italians tuxedo's and English whites. I'll try and get a couple pics posted tomorrow. I'm hoping to find me some bobwhites soon. And any other breed I can find. I love quail.
