I had my hen put to sleep

And I am feeling super terrible about it right now. I had her on her own as the rest of the flock started hurting her about 3 months back. Last week she suddenly went blind (I posted here about that) and I was going to let her go to see how she did. Well she slowly was stopping eating and this morning she couldnt stand up. I didnt want her to suffer and didnt want to cull her out like the others cause I felt like we were buds now. So I took her to the vet and had her put to sleep.
I have seen other birds die I dont know why im so upset. I will say I had no idea it took 5 minutes for the shot to work. And I felt bad having to wait and wondering if she knew she was dying. I feel like crap.

Don't feel bad. It sounds like you did the right thing. When you make the decision to put an animal down big or small it is hard. Especially when you grow to have an attachment to them. She is in a better place and you did all you could for her while she was alive. If I was you I would have done the same thing. My feelings go out to you. I have had to make that decision before and it never gets any easier....

i'm so sorry. this made me teary. i know what it is like to lose an animal that you love and it sucks. As terrible as it feels, you did the humane thing for her. She is better off not having to suffer so very much.

She's running around chicken heaven now! She has all the bugs, corn and oats she can eat and lots of dust baths! She can see and she feels soooo good! You did the right thing and she is thankful that she had you to love her.

I am so sorry that you had to say goodbye to your little chook, you absolutely did right by her and you should find comfort in that, some would have left her to die in pain, good on you for being such a caring human being X
