I had the squat scared out of me this morning!

I am an early riser. I am up by 4 a.m.
Make coffee, grab flashlight and head outside to sit on bench under live oak.
A person can see/learn ALOT about animal behaviour by watching.
Anyhows, sitting watching, listening-I hear a sound I have never heard. Kinda a cluck, cluck cluck (like a hen makes)b but mire guttural. Kinda cluff, cluff, cluff pause cluff, cluff, cluff.
NOT a bird.
I listen for about 10 minutes, and realize IT'S CLOSER. I hear leaves rattle right behind me and reach for flashlight. In my sleep fogged brain, I grabbed coffee, and left flashlight in house. I flew to porch, surprised I opened screen door without going through it. Grab light and head back outside. Calm pounding heart, sit back down in bench, cluff, cluff cluff again. Turn flashlight on and start looking, about 10 ft away, is an armadillo. I didn't know they talked.

First, I admire you for being an early riser. I got up at 4:20 for years when I had to be at work at 6. Now, I tend to get up at a leisurely 5 a.m.

Second, an armadillo!! And, one that talks!!! Seriously, I would have been, in turn, terrified and delighted! What a cool start to the day.

I was camping on vacation in Texas when a whole family of them came to our campsite at night looking for scraps.

Beautiful creatures.
We have them in South Carolina but you only see them dead on the side of the road.

I will have to listen out for their sound. Now i will know what to listen for.

Not sure.
My only sightings are dead on the road.
I have seen them in Oconee, Anderson and Greenville Counties SC.

Being an original yankee, I am still amazed every time i see one even if it is dead.

I had never heard one, total surprise. Never heard a sound from possum or skunk either. Do they "talk"?

Well opossums growl, they sound rabid. Opossums don’t go rabid, it’s extremely rare, but they are not rabid when they growl. I don’t know about possums.

I live in Florida and have like 5 armadillos living around my house. I love them.
