I HATE fire ants! I hate them hate them hate them!!!!!!

I can't use the Amdro around the chickens, and I have undeveloped land behind me and a vacant house on the side. As soon as I knock them out, new ones move in. I also have a pond, and many of the other kinds of killers are toxic to fish and amphibians.

Hate em!

I wish i could use amdro...

You can use Amdro. Just put it in a box, or under a board, where the chickies can't get to it. Where theres food, ants will find it. You can even put it on the ground, and put a bucket over it.

I can keep the pigs in their pen though...
How long till its safe to let them out again? (i mean after you put down the Amdro..)

You could try using Seven dust. It is safe for chickens. I put some under the shavings in my hen house to help control bugs and you can use it in their dust bath for mites. It will keep regular ants away. I have put it on Fire Ant mounds, but I don't know if it kills them. I do know that they leave that mound, at least.

The link above has some really good information. It gives a lot of detail about the different types of solutions available. If the info doesn't apply to you, try talking to the agriculture extension agent for solutions tailored to your area.

Poor chicks! Getting eaten alive by fire ants...

I fear that so much! Ever since we made our broody/baby raising enclosure, I have seen fire ants stealing food from my silkies. I worry that they will crawl up onto my special chicken, and because she cannot preen properly because of her body shape (she's like a dwarf), they might hurt her. I would hate having to find one of my chickens covered in fire ants. Just awful.

Everytime I see fire ants I pour poopy duck water all over the area that they're in. It doesn't kill them but they don't seem to like it very much.

I feel your pain.I hatched these iddy's the other day for a customer & took them to my brooder shed which I had just cleaned out. Put them in the brooder left for 10 minutes came back to find one iddy being attacked by fire ants nee
