When we had more drakes than we do now (only one with 10 ducks) we separated them in spring and summer. Drakes will mate with anything and everything when the urge is on them.
In fall and winter, pekins were most friendy and likable and fun to be around.
now he's the wierd thing, Boris(the agressor),only EVER mates with two hens, Junna the magpie, and Jumper, the crested mallard, not ever does he try to mate with maude, sage(who he grew up with), the runners, or mallards.
it seems most of the drakes, like Mojo and Big lenny have attached themselves to just a few hens, but never mate with others.
Just looking at your poor baby in the tub makes me cry. Literally.
I dont want Pekin or Rouens just because of looks , now I definantly dont want any. I like the "different" breeds of ducks, keeping it colorful.
Get rid of that boy. I got rid of a male a while ago who made a mob. He was fine when it was just him and an old drake and the girls, but then when his son got old enough he would grab a girl - the son would either shove him off of get on top of him, then the old man got into it. Having three drakes on one hen! I saw this once and after that the boys didnt get to free range any more. And they became a trasty treat for my neighbor with peacocks.
Hi there,
I to have had a duck endure an attack by a Pekin drake. Her poor head looked like raw hamburger when I found her. I thought that I had taken a picture of her right when it happened but I cannot find it. Here she is in the tub after her head had started to scab over. The scabs were black and eventually sloughed off. Her head looks perfectly normal now....all the feathers grew back. Her attack occurred in the winter so flies weren't an issue. I would be afraid to leave her in an outdoor pen to recover for fear of maggots. I work for a vet so have access to inexpensive meds and was able to put her on Metacam for a few days to relieve the discomfort and Baytril to prevent infection.
