Oh, how I hate raccoons!

They are not the cute faced, sweet furry little things so many people enjoy feeding and watching them come around. They are nasty vicious things.

Would a big great pyrenees help keep them away? Are those kind of dogs expensive to buy (as live stock guardians)? I would love to get something that would keep the raccoons away or kill them.

Yep, Great Pyranees (sp?) are great at keeping predators away from your flock!

And plus when they are puppies they are so cute!

Don't get an LGD breed if all you have for them to guard is a few chickens.

They are NOT good "pets" and shouldn't be allowed to roam free.

Any medium sized mutt from a pound can deter coons, and won't cause you near as many problems

I have a chow/collie mutt that is great and keeping the coons away...mainly because she traps&kills them

I have a horse and two goats in addition to my chickens. Both goats are very docile and the one is older and moves quite slow. My horse, goats and chickens are all out together.

Well, at this time my horse is at a stables for about another month (went out there when I broke my ankle).

I would not have it as a family pet, and it would be kept inside fenced acreage. And I was going to check shelters to see if any were available for adoption. I would prefer rescue before anything else (purchase, etc) I am not a person who ever lets any dog run free. Even in the country we have fenced in yard for our dogs and a livestock guardian would be in a fenced pasture. Fence is 4' high with hot wire at the top of it.
