Will my 11 year old cat be a huge threat to new ducks? I plan to keep the seperate while they're still ducklings, but when they're moved outside and bigger will my cat want to hunt them? Thanks!

Hmmm...I think it depends...If your cat is really big, then s/he might go after the ducks, but if your cat isn't that big, then it shouldn't be a big problem. S/he might "test" them once in a while, just to see if they're still on the alert, but if the ducks put your cat in her/his place, then you should be good. As long as the ducks are full grown, your cat is probably not going to be able to hurt them....keep an eye on your cats and ducks together, just to be sure that they're okay.

I have a huge British Shorthair whp always catches mice etc.

We kept him away from the ducklings but he roams around the garden with the ducks and doesn't bother with them at all.

I guess all cats are different though!x

I have three cats and short of one incident with a baby duckling, the cats haven't bothered mine. The first day I got the ducklings, West my orange tabby decided to steal a duckling when my back was turned. Thankfully no one was hurt. Mine are headed into their 5th week and so far the cats, while they have watched them, have not tried to eat them. Knock on wood. :)

Just be very, VERY careful. Cats carry a bacteria called Pasteurella which is deadly to birds! If your duckies manage to drink out of the kitties' water bowl or the cat bites one of the babies, things could get very bad very quickly.

As for my cat/duck situation, it's ...well, we take it one day at a time, ha! Wobbles is in full-blown hormonal drake mode so he beats the snot out of the poor kitties. Impressive, considering he weighs exactly one pound and my older cat weighs 20.

Wow, Amykins!
I never ever knew that.
Will make sure they stay away from the cat food and water from now on! :O

I don't mean to sound alarmist or anything, forgive me. Wobbles has been caught with his head in the cat food bowl multiple times and he's okay, but it's dry food and he's nearly 2 years old so his immune system is nice and developed (we still don't let him anywhere near the water dish or wet cat food). When you're dealing with babies, it's best to err on the side of caution. Can we get some photos of your pets sometime? I'd love to see!

Thank you for all the replies, my duckies come in May 12th!! My cat, Yoda is a pretty small cat but he still does love to hunt, we sometimes catch him with chipmunks but he's also pretty lazy, so we hope he just ignore them.
