My 3 year old long horn chicken started acting very strange. First she started refusing to speak but acted normal other wise. Then she started sitting down for long periods of time, showing no activeness what so ever, still never made a sound, and started refusing to eat. We brought her inside gave her some VetRx and another antibiotic just in case it's a respiratory issue cause of the humidity we are experiencing. When she was sleeping she laid down with her head on the floor as if she passed out. In the morning I checked her and her crop was full and squishy. Well today she is still really sluggish and just stays standing up. She has not sat down at all. She has been drinking water and barely eating. Her poops have been very watery and green. She is also a little bit swollen from the back. I also checked her breath and it's normal. What could possibly be wrong with her, and what should I do to help her?

Sorry to hear about your chicken. How is she doing now?

You said her crop was full this morning? Was that first thing? Their crops should always be flat first thing in the morning before they eat anything. She may be having crop issues. Can you try getting her to peck at some chunks of coconut oil and then massaging her crop after that?

What antibiotic did you give her? VetRX is like Vicks vapor rub but for chickens.

You also said her back end may be swollen, do you mean her abdomen, between her legs? This could indicate reproductive issues. When was her last egg? Sometimes crop issues and reproductive issues go hand in hand.

Yes the first thing this morning i checked her crop and it was full. I Will try the coconut. And more of her vent area was swollen. Her last egg was 2 days ago I believe. I will do the best I can. She finally ate a little bit and sat down earlier.

Glad to hear she ate a little bit. Keep encouraging her to drink. Try some electrolytes perhaps.

Although it sounds like she is having a crop issue. I’m going to link a great article by @azygous about crop issues and how to treat them.

For your hen yes I would start with some coconut oil. You can freeze some and chop it into little chunks, I’ve never had mine not like to peck at it. I’ve also mixed some olive oil with raw egg or coconut oil instead, and they’ve liked that, too. Once she ingests a bit, start massaging her crop as suggested in the article to try to break up any material preventing it from draining.

With her back end being swollen she may have bigger issues going on, but it’s tough to say if that’s related to her crop issues or coincidental. Some hens have swollen abdomens from being a bit chubby and some from fluid or pus build up due to reproductive issues.
