I live in Central Virginia. I am still trying to get my chicken coop built but I have made some headway :) Is there a cut off time I should give myself to get chicks for them to survive the cold weather?

Also, someone in the area has a used chicken tractor. Do I need to be leary of purchasing items like this because of disease?

Thanks!

I think I posted this in the wrong place earlier. Sorry if you're seeing this more than once!

I've lived in south, central Virginia. You don't have severe cold weather. LOL. Anyhow, no, it is not too late. Getting chicks in early September is ideal, in my view, because it is still very warm, easy to brood them out and they can go out to the coop, with no assistance by early to mid October. They'll be all grown up by New Year's. They may even begin to lay eggs by the beginning of February.

I wouldn't be concerned about diseases with a used tractor, but I'd still hose it down with ammonia.
