I have a dog who kills chickens HELP

My dog has always loved laying in the coop, she likes the shavings. She'd watch the babies but never move towards them. Now they are big and want to pick at her so I have to watch them more carefully, I'm afraid they'll peck her and she'll snap without thinking. She's a Jack Russell who chases critters in the woods if I allow. But off leash if I say no she stays at my heels. So only a medium prey drive. My daughter's dog would never be trustworthy beyond arms length. Never off leash for him, very high prey drive. He's been taught not to shake barn cats but if they run away my confidence in my training with him isn't very high.

Some dogs you'll find will get 90% safe at best. But pets have no particular rights to equality in the yard either. Make the chicken run big enough for comfort and add a hot wire. That's what I'd do. Got pics of their set up?

No matter what you do, that dog cannot ever be trusted around chickens, particularly when you are out of sight. When the chickens are out, tie the dog, kennel the dog, or keep it in the house.

not necessarily though no dog on the planet will ever be 100%. no prep work or training was done with the dog and most likely the dog didn't set out to kill chickens but merely to play and, well, one happy bounce and no more chicken.

We don't have a dog but a neighbor dog seems to come around by the chickens all the time. He has broke in to the run area over the last several years. He has pulled up the chicken wire from under the ground in about three places so we had to to put metal around until Spring comes so we can redo the enclosure. He doesn't go after the hens, he goes after anything food that I give the hens. It doesn't matter if it's cat food, people food or the hens food, he wants what the hens are eating. Neighbor knows what his dog is doing and he supplied us the metal so his dog can't get into the run area. It has worked. Dog runs all the time off leash. We are not in the city limits but rural. Dog and Hen have come face to face one time while we watched dog and never attacked the hen. Hens go after his tail and try to peck at it more than once.

I got Chicks when my dog was about 2 yrs old. I was very worried as he is a working bred German Shepherd with very high prey drive. I think it helped that I started with chicks in a brooder that sat low to the ground that he could easily see into in my garage and we both sat out there for hours everyday for 5 weeks just watching them. When I handled chicks, if he had too much interest I would use my sound for no. One time after they were in a coop and free roaming he flung one in the air. My granddaughter saw him and let him know that was not ok. Have not seen him since pay much attention to the chickens, he is too busy watching and hoping I will pick up his frisbee to throw.
