I am aware not to breed to crested together. Did the ducks that were messed up like that hatch or did you just open the egg shell and see that?

the one pipped but that was it, the others didnt even do that. They were crested BEIs (mom and dad both were cresteds)

heres the info on cresteds:

"A crested duck has one copy of the gene for crest and one copy of the gene for no crest. If two crested ducks are bred together then the expectation is that you would get 25% young with two copies of the gene, 50% with one copy and 25% with no copies."

and

"Also crests are recorded as having reduced penetrance, which means that while the offspring might inherit the gene it does not always express; so the duck might be gentically crested while appearing non crested. Which is why one sometimes hears of a crested offspring being hatched from parents where neither parent was thought to be crested."

The 25% that get no copies of the gene, and the 50% that get one copy will be OK.
