I have a sick quail hen

She’s up and about this morning, acting normal, her vent still seems kind of saggy, and a bit crusty so I cleaned it again (she won’t stay in a bowl of water now that she feels better) and put some neosporine on it to keep it moist. I think she might have scraped the edges a bit rubbing her vent on the bedding trying to get the egg out. I brought another girl in to keep her company, and hopefully in a couple days she’ll be good as new.

with me helping her, I could feel her pushing and the egg move down to the exit, but then she stopped pushing and it went right back up, so I squeezed gently behind it (in front of it depending on the direction your looking haha) after she pushed so it couldn’t retract, then I gently slid the vent back a little and she pushed again and I helped save her progress etc, and it finally popped out, thru the whole thing she never prolapsed so I’m hoping she will recover. I’ll see how she does after a night inside.
I suppose the danger could have been if you had broken the egg inside, with infection the result. With budgies, smearing olive oil on the cloaca - i think the vent is the anus - is one way you might have helped her do it herself. I notice you used warm water. A last resort might have been a steam bath under her, but this should only be used as a last resort.

cloaca and vent are the same thing. Birds only have one outlet. Poop and eggs come out of the same hole.
