About a week ago I noticed my goose was not eating or acting helathy. I took her to the vet and he said she had pneumonia. So he gave me some antibiotics (amoxicillin) and told me to keep her in a warm dry place for two days. Well it's now a week later and she is still in the chicken house I built for her and wont eat. I called the vet and he gave me some liquid steroids (dexamethasone) as a last resort. This was two days ago and she is still not eating. I tried to stand her up and she just falls down. Now I am feeding her chicken starter mixed with water and syringing it down her throat. She is drinking on her own because I put a bowl of water in front of her. Any ideas what I can do more? Thanks

Sorry I'm not really a goose expert.
Just keep doing what you are doing and hope she pulls through
By the way

Thanks for your concern. She died this morning while I was trying to make her more comfortable. She gave a little fight and just fell asleep. I learned a lot of stuff through the last two weeks of her life. She taught me how to care for my other goose if it ever gets ill or starts looking as if she is, so Jade didn't die in vain! I also found out that you are all your goose has when it becomes sick. Vets really don't know much about fowl and they don't seem to care much either. I live in a farm community and people around here looks at you a little funny when you try to save your pet goose. But when you raise something by hand and it loves you as a parent, you have to do something to save it. When I found what I needed to save my goose on the internet it was to late. Never stop trying no matter what pet you have that is sick. Thanks again…

I am so sorry to hear that Jade didn't make it despite your wonderful care - I have geese myself and they are my babies, as are my ducks and chickens - you did all you possibly could have done to help her - sadly no Vet here would even look at a fowl....I am dependent on BYC there are some extremely knowledgeable people here ........my Veterinary advisers!

So sorry once again!

Thank you Suzie..
Now my other goose is looking a little down, possible mourning the los of her friend that she took to raise. I took her in to be with Jade last night and she talked and talked to Jade. This morning she went to the coop and seen she was gone. Now I have to keep my eyes on her. She did this 6 years ago when she lost her friend duck to an awl, so that’s when I got Jade. I guess I need to get her another friend. I have a friend that has a male goose but my female has never been with a male before. So I’m wondering if I should do this or not. Any advice on this?

Yes, she will be mourning the loss of Jade... A male should be fine with her - maybe introduce them together and observe them... all of my geese attach to others male/female without any problems ... do you have any ducks she can bond with? Sometimes they will attach to ducks as well!

I am just so very sorry for your loss - your remaining girl will be lonely - they are very social - she should do well with another companion and a male would normally look after her too.

Thinking of you.....and your girl

Thanks again. It's been a terrible day! I have a friend that is going to give me a goose that is only a year old. She doesn’t know if it’s a male or female. I will pick “it” up in the morning and see what happens. I will let you know. Thanks for all of your support, but I still feel I let Jade down on this one. I know she is soaring like an eagle in heaven right now.

You are completely right that vets don't care for poultry. I took a sick hen into my vet clinic once (my first and last time) and all they said was that they are not going to give up their time just for a chicken.
You did everything you could for Jade and in the end that's all that matters.
Keep us posted on how it goes with the new goose.
All your birds are lucky to have an owner like you.

Thanks Fancyfeathers... I thought vets were doctors to most all animals... Guess Not!!!!
Well it's been 4 days now since Jade died. Still a little sad over it, lifted her up to God and gave her a nice burial.. My daughter and I picked up a new goose Saturday and she named him Mr. Goose…. The previous owner called him “goose” so Mr. Goose responds to his new name. Yazy (my female goose) has been eating and sleeping a lot and she has not paid Mr. Goose much attention. He follows her every where she go’s and seems to protected her. I swear she flipped him the wing yesterday!! LOL She is starting to build her nest so she is going to lay some eggs soon I‘m thinking. I don’t think Mr. Goose has mated with her yet. He is only a year old and kind of clumsy around her, kinda like his first date. He doesn’t eat much, little concern over that. I called the last owner and she told me to feed him a little bread, so I did and he eat that… Anyways, that’s how the Goose life at my place is going.. I will keep everyone updated… Thanks for all the kind words about Jade...
