I have a hen and she has her own little hide-out and she only comes down 1-2 times every 2 weeks. My plan is to put 1 or 2 fertile eggs under her so she can hatch them out. Should I do it? If so, any tips? Thanks!

I like my chickens to stay together, and I just rehomed a hen that refused to lay in the nest-box. She was like yours, kinda in and out of the flock. It drove me crazy wondering if she had been killed. Then she would turn up, fill her crop and head back for the woods. I found one of her secret nests filled with rotten eggs..

. If it were me, I'd worry that she would teach her chicks her ways, then you will have several that don't come home to roost...then later don't come home to lay their eggs. Sorry to be a downer, but i've been dealing with this hen for 2 years and I'm over it.

Actually.... My hen is up on a hut by my shed. She's not in woods at all. What I would do is let her hatch them out then I'd take them and put them in the brooder.
