I have finally found what I am REALLY good at......

Crab grass is realively easy to get rid of in flower beds and gardens because it doesn't make those terrible rhizomes that go everywhere. Just dig it out, and its gone. Be sure that you do this before it goes into seed...or else.

In Canada, we don't have Bermuda grass, we have quack grass, which is probably the same thing. The only way that I've found to make a dent in it is to us the "garden claw" tool to loosen the dirt as deep as possible and start pulling...making sure that I've gotten as many roots and rhizomes as possible. Basically your looking at years of hard manual labor and lots of sweating.

Perhaps this would be easier.

Regarding your lawn, I would bet that if you tilled it out and raked it smooth and reseeded....you'd have a lush beautiful lawn in no time. My feeling is that the bald patches in your lawn are due to lack of aeration(sp?). That and possibly lawn grubs. **if you choose to do this perhaps let your chickens range on it during the tilling process to eat any fat grubbies that you turn up.

I agree with the others suggestions of lots of composted matter. Until I got my chickies, my fave was mushroom compost. It adds wonderful texture to clay soils.
