It started with two escape’ s from a Tyson plant. They escaped the transport, the cages and the property. My husband came to the rescue and we caught them and took them home. That became the beginning. I did not know that there are meat chickens and regular laying chickens. They only lasted a few months and quadrupled in size. I had purchased 3 REd’s at the same time and compared the two Breeds. Not knowing anything and my husband remembers some from his early years We had a chicken area. We loved the eggs, I soon learned that they are the bottom of the food chain. We lost chickens to land, sea and air. I vowed not to give up and we kept going ahead, more chicks and here we go again. We have a plastic snap together hen house (which I love). East to break apart to clean . Bought a big dog pen 10 x 10 and cover it with a tarp to give them plenty of room during bad weather. We moved them up to the house, and the killing has slowed down. I have 6 dogs and they all have learned to give way to the chickens while they are free ranging. I talked to them all the time and our crew in the shop brings them scraps on and above mine. They know every voice and can guess what they are going to get. I now have a house hen that is afraid to go outside. I put her out the door and keep and eye on her, she is just now getting used to being out for short period of time. But as soon as I let her back in, she chicken cusses me loud and long for putting her out. We are still working on the training, hopefully she will get it. She found a quiet spot to sleep and to lay her egg. We have a tile floor and it seem that she prefers that to padding. We named her “Henny Penny”, since she if scared to stay outside. I have a good poultry Vet and he said that her eye sight was not very good. I love this site, since I still don’t know squat about chickens, This is her breed and she looks just like this one. My pictures are not that good.
