I have hatched a three legged chick

He is just fine, eating, drinking, peeping and pooping. He or she is really sweet. I'm trying to find out if he was out of a double yolk or if it is purely genetic. I have a GQF(love it) and have had several "surprise" extra chicks hatch this year.

It probably wasn't a double yoker but a double embryo that fused together... I know in humans when this happens the one embryo dies after just starting to Davide and the other absorbs it's twin and the absorption is incomplete so that is how you get an extra limb or two chicks growing together... To cool... You should call him Lucky or Miracle because the odds of a chick living through a incomplete absorption and then being able to hatch on it's own, and everything working correctly is like a billion to one odds... He or she is very cute!

Believe it or not but you could sell him/her for a lot of money!!! There are a lot of people out there that pay top dollar for an animal with an oddity... It's true... I've seen it.... If you sell your chicks a weird looking chicken may not be the best thing for people to see when they look at your flock for their next layers... But if you keep yours as pets I would say keep him/her!!! Best of luck...

I was reading only yesterday about 4 legged chickens - you gonna call it Jake (the peg)?

He is cute!

Am I right in thinking this was originally a double yolker?

Thanks for the information, I was also thinking the absorbed twin route, just wasn't sure the same could go for chickens. He is a miracle, considering all they must do to hatch. My family and friends told me to advertise him, but you have to know how I am. I'm not real religious but I feel like God shared him with me, so I need to see that he is cared for and loved. Already attached to him since he is different!

I do raise a few chicks to sell, but nothing for show or special, mostly I love to candle eggs and take pictures and the results at the end of 21 days cannot all stay with me. My babies are so much healthier than what seems to come from the hatchery that I never have a problem selling them locally, so I'm not concerned with a genetic problem. I add to my flock each year from a new source but can't be sure "someone" didn't jump the chicken line and visit his cousin.

I Love all the name suggestions and tonight I'll have to let him tell me what his name is. Will let you know and post more pics!
