I have nearly all bantams...but I want 1 standard hen for eggs...

I like my EEs the best, mostly because I can tell them apart they are so different. But I'm not sure I would pick an ee to be kind to smaller birds. Mine are the most aggressive/curious of all of them. I would pick a Buff orp. They are supposed to be sweet but often on the bottom of the pecking order because of this. My buff orps are scared (way scared) of me. The rest are fine. only 5 weeks though.

Does anyone keep any ee's with banties?.....

Why can't you use the bantam eggs? they are usually small to med. just adjust the number you use

I'm sure I will....but I don't want to have to figure out how many to use....lol And I will be using a lot of the banty eggs to make more banties... hehe

If you want a good layer and a pretty bird I would go Golden Laced Wyadotte or Silver Laced Wyadotte.
I personally think Black Australorps are very pretty, they are black but have a beautiful green violet shade. they are awesome layers of HUGE eggs.

Some of my best layers are Hannah, my barred rock, and Henrietta, my buff orp. Hannah is really sweet. My Buff orp goes broody, though. I'd recommend barred rocks. I also have a lt brahma. She just went broody, as did my cochin. I have heard that the "heavies" tend to go broody. I have found that to be true in my flock. Too bad you don't like red hens, 'cause Ruby Red, my RIR, pumps one out EVERY day, *BUT* she is not one of my friendliest hens.

My banty ruled over my EE's but she was an adult when the EE's arrived as chicks. She put them in their place early and gave any of them what for if a challenge was attempted.

I keep 2 adult EE's w/ my juvenile banties & young standards with no problems 2 all. They all get along great. I love the EE's! They are pretty, sweet, & lay daily most of the time. We added 3 new ones this year...I also love my Black Austrolorp, though. Very beautiful beetle green feather sheen with purple swirling into the mix in the sunlight, just as Smartychick says. She's the sweetest one of all too. She's 2 yrs old & lays 3-4 big eggs a week still, except she just went broody for the first time & is setting some eggs for me till Memorial Day weekend.

Edited to also mention that since you live in a cold region, the EE's have a small "pea comb", which would be less prone to frostbite...
