Hi Friends!

A month ago we got 4 chickens, they are a year old. An Americana, a Silkie, a Fav and a mutt :) They all came from the same safe home and same flock.

The Mutt became sick on Friday and we have had a crash course in chicken Respiratory diseases / Sinus infection over the last 3 days. When we went out in the morning to let them out her eyes were white. They are now cleared up and have lost the goopiness. We have her away from the other 3 while she heals and will keep her away for 3 weeks until the eggs will be safe to eat again. OKay, so that's the back ground.

I decided to spend the whole day watching them today to assure myself that the other 3 were healthy. The Fav and the Americana are beautiful. They do make snorting, squeaking, coughing, sneezing noises every now and again which sound normal and kinda funny. Their feathers are shiny, puffy and beautiful. I am assuming the noises are normal.

I noticed the Silkie looked smaller than when we brought her home so I mixed a dish of food and separated her so she could eat in peace and I could see if she was eating. She enjoyed it immensely and we seemed to be bonding. I read on line we could lay a towel over her and pick her up to spend some time stroking. She did not like it and when I put her back into the hen house I noticed a 2 inch by 1 inch red/pink protrusion coming out of her bumm!! Scared me to death. My littlest said "her vagina is falling out."

I also noticed a small amount of blood.

As you can imagine the last few days have been a very steep learning curve. I guess I am just wondering if this was indeed a normal fear reaction and that the red/pink hot dog like protrusion is the way they lay eggs.

I did just watch a couple Youtube videos and it appears so but you folks always make me feel so much better. :)

Thank you for any insights,

It happens fairly often. The only risk is that it will happen again and not go back in. When that happens, you have a real problem.

Keep an eye on her. Make sure she has proper nutrition and a good supply of free choice oyster shells to augment shell production. Should you ever see it again, separate her immediately.

Good luck
